3 Things That Matter the Most
drewvigal:
I’ve been reflecting on these wise words lately:
In the end, only 3 things matter the most:
How fully you lived
How deeply you loved
How well you learned… to let go

Always sad to see people beat you to the punch! Their implementation is the best I’ve seen thus far. One thing that may still be open for grabs is how to turn this idea to target women? Everything I’ve seen is too masculine.

The Most Interesting Take on the Movie Inception →
Mal is just as duped by the shift in dream levels as Cobb is, but she eventually realizes that she is still stuck in a dream. She tries to convince Cobb of this, but he is convinced he is in reality. Mal, no longer able to live in a world she knows as fake, jumps off the ledge and kicks herself back into reality, leaving Cobb behind.
Rogue furthers explains:
Cobb is, indeed, the subject of...

If you haven’t seen the interview Jeff Bezos gave on Charlie Rose, you can find it here
Even though the bulk of the interview revolved around the new Kindle, the most interesting topic to me took place at the end around min 36:27 when Bezos is asked about the impact of social media on consumer choice. Here’s his answer:
On the internet, word of mouth is more powerful than it has...

Client: I am a Christian and Apple products are sinful, I do not want our website to be created by a product made by this corrupt group. You need only look at their logo, an apple with a bite taken from it. Do you not know the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden? If I...
iPhone Is Coming to a CDMA Carrier Near You →
John Gruber:
I don’t know anything about negotiations with Verizon, and I doubt anyone does other than the highest-level executives at both companies. But I do know that engineering-wise, the wheels are turning on N92, the CDMA variant of the iPhone 4. It’s certainly not in production yet, and hasn’t reached DVT status (device verification test — like Gray Powell’s infamous stolen unit), but it...

Misnaming: A mental 'snap to grid' →
Marco Arment’s analogy and take on why misnaming occurs:
Maybe these common, consistent mistakes are like a mental “snap to grid” feature, because people are wired to remember names in certain ways. When something is misaligned according to our norm, we have a very hard time getting it right and will predictably screw it up in the same way at a large scale.

My Sentiments Exactly on the French World Cup Team →
“We must be the only country in the world pleased to see its team lose,” said a 20-year-old student in a bar in central Paris after watching the humiliating defeat.
“I’m disgusted that France scored because they’ll be boasting about that,” she said.
and finally, from the man himself, Michel Platini:
Before France’s World Cup campaign had even begun the most...

Cameron's theory on Apple's one button philosophy →
There’s an odd sentiment among nerds that Steve Jobs (and the fine people at Apple) hate buttons. I have a different theory: they absolutely love buttons.
I’d say not only nerds have that sentiment but anyone that’s comfortably been using 2 buttoned mice including Apple fans. At the end Apple “conceded” by building a “right click” option in the OS — not...

The Other "Thoughts" on Flash →
As always, it is critical to seek out and listen to opposing views to help us shape our own opinions on things. Thom Holwerda of OSNews has some interesting points on Steve Job’s Thoughts on Flash starting with how Apple itself is slow at adopting new technologies:
However, Apple has one massive application that is still fully Carbon and 32bit, an application that is very similar in scope...

The Afghan Conflict - A Map of Possible Scenarios starts with the current Timeline, a single line on the map. Which then splits into more and more possible future scenarios currently discussed. The design is pure and minimalistic, using only lines and typographic elements, which does...

iPhone OS 4's Folders vs. Drawers — A HN chat with...
Me: Apple’s approach is closer to a folder metaphor than Lukas's. http://goo.gl/NMhl
Lukas Mathis: So you're saying real-world folders switch around the positions of their contents when you open them? :-)
Me: That would be confusing! Not at all, I'm simply saying your take is a lot like a popover and think that Apple's implementation though not perfect, is closer to a folder. Actually, to be exact they should have really called it "Drawers" because that's how their animated and in a drawer, contents do indeed get shuffled around! Although, I've had instances when handling bulky folders and moving them around, the top most documents would get accidentally rearranged! ;-)
Lukas Mathis: I agree, drawers would have been an apt metaphor. Also, drawers get stuck sometimes, so that would be something interesting Apple could emulate, as well :-)
I do think that it would have been cool if an opened folder would show apps...
– ignore the code: iPhone OS 4.0
Consistency and Recognition are two major UI principles and when I first saw the iPhone OS 4 Folders implementation, I had the exact same observation as Lukas’s above. However, the more I think about his implementation compared to Apple’s, Apple’s...

I guess I wasn’t that off, Stack Exchange is now free! Something that I’d alluded to in this previous post I wrote back on March 31st:
You can’t beat free —well in this case at least— and that’s where I think further funding to support this ultimate goal maybe a good idea as it may make room for a free edition of Stack Exchange.
